A whatever level we play golf, our performance on the course is determined by what our mind does, think about it. You can play to your handicap one day, and yet you’re 15 over the next; you can hit the ball consistently on the practice ground, but not out on the course when it most counts in competition; you can use all of the clubs in your bag except, say the 4 -iron; you usually play well around your home course, but for some reason always seem to make a mess of the 14th hole; you have no problem with putts of 10 or 15 feet, but become anxious over a relatively simple 3-footer,  you can chip perfectly well around the green, but always duff the ball when you are faced with a shot over a bunker…(Dilemmas of the Golfer’s psyche)

Despite the wealth of technical knowledge available to us, and our eagerness to analyse and work on our swing, we still wrestle with the frustration of playing reasonably well one day, but terribly the next. While we might go out and shoot 95 on Saturday morning, on Sunday afternoon we can do no better than 105, even though we are playing on the same course, with the same clubs, under the same weather conditions and with same partners(s).

Whether we like it or not, our performance is determined by our mental state, or The inner Game of Golf, The game is played within the mind- the ‘ Dilemmas of the Golfer’s Mind’. As the great amateur Booby jones implied many years ago, there is a lot to be gained if we can learn to control the workings of our mind when we are out on the golf course, i.e. improve our golfer’s mind – Golf mental skills


Dilemmas of the Golfer’s Psyche, all good players reach patches in midst of rounds when their game go awry. I’m not talking about te habitual Erratics. I mean consistant, good players who for no apparent reason start marking a string of bogeys.

We hear people talk more and more about the importance of the mind in golf. I tend to be one of the biggest culprits. I m fascinated by dilemmas the game throws up. Why is it that we fear shorts putts? Why do some people freeze when they have to play over water? What drives us to make a mess of a relatively simple shot at a crucial stage in a match? And why is that we are able to hit the ball well on the practice ground, but never play as well as know that we can in competition?


These phenomena – and there are many others – cannot be explained in purely physical terms. We spent much of out time learning about the theory of swinging a golf club, and yet we lack the self – control to be able to put that knowledge into practice. The point at which we recognise this is usually the point at which we consider learning about Golf is a Mental Game .


As spectators, it is often the mental side of golf that gives us such drama and excitement. The Ryder Cup matches have perhaps proved more than anything else that at the highest level golf and shows that golf is a mental game . Even the world’s greatest players feel the strain. Some crack under the pressure of intense competition, while others seem to thrive on a challenge and shift up a gear when the heat is on. However,  few of us ever perform up to the level of our true potential for more than a brief period of time. We might play the odd good shot, or produce a good round once in a while, but we find it hard to sustain our performance over any given length of time. The game That we play against ourselves is much more difficult than the one which we play against the golf course. We hit great shots some of the time, and it’s these that keep us going when our game won’t come together.


I ‘ m not a professional golfer, and  I will attempt to teach you the technical or physical skills that are necessary to play the game. They are covered in more than enough detail elsewhere.  But I will talk about the importance of learning and perform these skills as well as golf is a mental game.

Control Your Emotions

Golf leads itself to self-criticism. In some extreme cases this criticism becomes temper tantrum and display of emotion unbecoming to a gentleman, that is where the Psychology of golf comes in read on.


We are our own most severe critics, especially when it comes down to a situation like nudging a little white ball two feet into a hole. Golf is unlike other sports. The opponent never touches the ball. There is only one person to blame, unless the irate golfer wants to challenge the work of the greenkeeper or the man in the foursome ahead who didn’t repair the damage his approach made to the green. Even you are playing weekend foursome, the most important shot is the next one. Do not worry about shining the trophy until you are in the clubhouse.

We have all been here , the player who baits their opponents into making mistake. Yes it is difficult , but remember your next shot. Most golfers are too smart nowdays to be duped by this type of strategy. Some will make the mistake, though, of playing the event. For the tournament player who dose not concentrate properly on the immediate task, it will take a few more shots than par.

TIP! You must learn a correct grip as soon as you begin playing golf. Many people mistakenly believe they should grip the club extra-tight to hit the ball further.

Fellowship can mean much to the amateur golfer. That’s why the same foursomes play together for years ad is good part of Psychology of golf .

Nothing can shake your poise quicker than an opponent who toses irritating barbs for 18 holes, like “you’d better straighten up that hook on this hole or you will be in trouble.” Or, “ Run it out,jim”, after you have hit a weak drive, the inference being that you have purposely bunted.

TIP! If you are staring down a really long putt, then you should concentrate your focus on what speed you hit your ball with. Choose an intermediate target rather than the hole.

A good advice is to postpone play if you can not find suitable companions. It reminders me of a wonderful fellow who changed completely when he walked on the golf course. He was congenial but when he putted he was hard to get along with. He did not want you to stand in front of him, behind him or to the sid. Lat I heard, he was still having trouble getting a foursome because he could not find anyone who would disappear when he was on the green.

On the amateur level, the point can not be made too strongly: do not play with somebody if he bugs you. Golf life is too short to come into the clubhouse carrying frustration that you did not have when you teed off.

Imitate The Right People

TIP! If you can, golf with good players and study their technique. There are various ways to benefit from a pro golfer.

Golfers come in all shape, sizes and weights. They execute good,bad and indifferent shots with swing and stances that vary greatly in charcter. For that reason, it might be costly to try to imitate your partners or one of the opponets in your foursome unless it is to learn which way a putt breaks or something equally as elementary.

I have seen players who would hit a seven iron extra hard in order to tout their opponents into using a club less than the hole demanded, thus causing them to hit the trap protecting the green Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery in other place but on the golf course it can be treacherous.

TIP! To keep your energy up on the golf course, you should bring a snack with you. Foods high in protein, like nuts and seeds, are the perfect golfing companion.

In this connection, I might add that it’s not wise to imitate everything you see the pros do on television. Most of them are experienced and can make a ball do strange things with a turn of the hand or twist of the body that you might not detect. Perhaps it s best to get a mental picture of the pros’ rhythm and swing and use this as a basis for your own game
